RIVER STONES
In Japan, stepping stones were first used in the sixteenth century to lead guests into a teahouse. Their natural setting was part of the process of focusing one๊s attention inward toward harmony and silence before the Tea Ceremony.
River Stones is a collection of sixteen field stones each inscribed with a word set into a garden around a dry streambed of river pebbles and boulders. Our eyes alight on each of these carved 'stepping stones' as we move from stone to stone.
The waterfall in the background echoes the weeping cherries. The dry river pebbles flow into the pond beyond. Water falls from one pond to the next, as our own heart's opening ebbs and flows.
