Tree Phoenix, 2003
The Tree Phoenix is a tree trunk bursting up from the earth like a breaching whale from the ocean. Vital and active although no longer a tree, the life force of nature and beauty resurrect like a phoenix from ashes. The large bole is filled with bright, fiery feathers and the center planed surface of elongated tree rings is filled with a pool of gold. The trunk has shed its protective bark. The sculpture's vulnerability heightens our awareness of the fragility of the natural world and at the same time affirms its survival.
The Tree Phoenix was first installed in Concord, MA along the Concord River as part of Sculpture Walk, 2003 sponsored by the Emerson Umbrella for the Arts and Musquetaquid.
